Opened in 2007, the Orchard Garden was only the fourth hotel in the world to win LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, meaning it was designed according to strict environmental standards. Chemical-free cleaning products are used in its energy-saving rooms, which are large by boutique hotel standards (and surprisingly quiet); furnishings sport a pale green and light wood palette. The lobby-level restaurant relies on organic, seasonal ingredients. The fitness centre is petite, but discounted day passes are available to larger gyms nearby; the rooftop garden beckons in fair weather. A few blocks away on Bush Street, between Stockton and Powell, is its sister operation, the similarly pleasant and modern - though not as 'green' - Orchard Hotel.
