If you’ve never tried these, it’s high time you did. Why should visitors have all the fun?
Forest Adventure
Make like Tarzan or Jane in these 1.5 hectares of green space. The waterfront aerial course takes place five metres above the ground, where you’ll slice your way through the trees and foliage with the help of ladders, bridges, swings, a trapeze and slides. The Grand Course comprises 32 stages and takes up to two hours, while the Kids’ Course has 16 stages and takes about an hour to complete. Take heart: there are a total of five zip lines and a 176m-long flying fox to help speed things up.
Bedok Reservoir Park, Bedok Reservoir Rd (8100 7420, www.forestadventure.com.sg). Bedok. Buses 22, 65, 67, 168. Tue-Sun 10am-6pm (last departure 4.30pm). Grand Course: $25; students $22; under 16 years old $20. Kids’ Course: $18 (one round), $25 (two rounds), $35 (for two hours).
Haw Par Villa
FREE There’s nowhere quite as outlandish as the legendary Haw Par Villa, built in 1937 by Tiger Balm entrepreneur Aw Boon Haw as a means of preserving Chinese culture. Today, the park not only holds a memorial of the Aw family, but is also home to a surrealistic collection of more than 1,000 statues. A laughing Buddha, scantily clad Chinese maidens, and a cheeky monkey god all exist in bizarre harmony alongside a menacing, 3m-tall King Kong, sumo wrestlers and 1.5mhigh Statue of Liberty. Don’t miss out on the Ten Courts of Hell exhibition. You’ll walk in semi-darkness through the ten stages of hell – based on Taoist mythology – which depict the punishments that await sinners in the afterlife. See how the liars have their tongues snipped in half and those guilty of filial disobedience have their hearts dug out. A favourite haunt of parents with naughty children.
262 Pasir Panjang Rd (6872 2780). Buona Vista, then bus 200 or HarbourFront, then bus 10, 30, 148, 188. Daily 9am-7pm. Ten courts of Hell Exhibition closes at 6pm. $1.
Makansutra Organised Food Safari
Tour Founded by local culinary hero KF Seetoh, Makansutra organises tailormade food tours. Choose from five tours: NSEW (food from four corners of Singapore), Multi-cultural (flavours from Little India, Geylang Serai, Katong and Chinatown), Off the Beaten Track (food from hard-to-find places), Uniquely Singapore (distinctive local dishes) and Midnight Tour (for those on the prowl for supper joints). The tours are conducted by a ‘food host’ and guide trained by Seetoh; all you need to do is show up, listen and eat, lah.
