Pamper your pets
K-9 Kulture Club
There’s so much to do in a day: take your laundry to the dry cleaners, pick up your daughter from ballet class, drop off your dog for...choreography lessons? That’s right, now you can get your dog trained to cruise the catwalk at K-9 Kulture Club, the first of its kind in Asia. Operating from his home in Seagull Walk, owner and head coach Josiah has nine years’ experience training dogs who have become national and obedience champions. Here, aside from the typical day-care and training services, he focuses on communication with his clients using the K-9 language that he calls, simply, ‘Dog’. It’s a detailed course blending observational body language, proper eye contact, touch and energy management, with emphasis placed on the four Rs: Rules, Routines, Rituals and Resources. Your pet will be taught social etiquette skills and proper greeting methods so you’ll no longer have to stop him/her from humping, bullying or fighting. Fido can also undergo casting and choreography lessons (if his owner thinks he belongs in the spotlight). Physical rehabilitation (categorised by weight) includes a 2km run with a pack of six to eight dogs, a hunting game, several minutes on a treadmill, and swimming lessons offered either in a wading pool or a 1.2m-deep pool. An average of 60 dogs are kept on-site, including golden retrievers, miniature schnauzers, Rottweilers, German shepherds and sheepdogs. That said, the club does not accept all dogs; alas, genetically dominant and predatory, aggressive breeds like the Akita and French poodle will be rejected in most cases.
For non-members, walk-in pups have to go through a temperament test ($30) on admission, and daily rates are calculated by the weight of the dog, while overnight stays cost $15 a night. Become a Silver Member by purchasing 20 single-day passes from $27 each; a Gold Member with 40 passes from $24 each; Platinum if you get 80 passes from $21 each; or Royal Platinum with 320 passes from $18 each. 110 Turf Club Rd (6314 9363, www.k9kulture.com). Clementi, then taxi. Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, Sat & Sun 9am-6pm.
Pet Movers
Relocating anywhere is a major hassle, but even more so if you have a pet. It’s a good thing Pet Movers provides a range of pet-friendly import and export services to lighten your load. For $74, they’ll transport your pet from Changi Airport to Pet Movers’ quarantine station in Sembawang, dispense the required rabies vaccination ($65) for all imported pets, and quarantine them ($13.50 per day) for the standard Singaporean requirement of 30 days. You can choose to house your pet in a small or large kennel or cattery at a daily rate of $15 or $23 per day (without air-conditioning), or shell out a little extra dough so your beloved can enjoy a large, air-conditioned kennel or cattery at $20 or $28. You can also visit every day (except public holidays) from 10am-4pm, and even buy treats from the facility’s on-site shop. Once released from quarantine, you can enrol your pet in a ten-week obedience-training class ($200-$300) to enhance its sensory skills. And Pet Movers also has a pet ambulance service available around the clock, all year round for approximately $80 and upwards.
4 Pasir Ris (Farmway II) to 61 Pasir Ris (Farmway III) (6581 3688, www.petmovers.com.sg). Take a taxi. Mon-Fri 9am- 6pm, Sat & Sun 9.30am-7pm.
The Pet Safari
For anyone bored by the banality of local pet shops, this massive 9,000ft2 store in VivoCity offers an unusual shopping experience for both pets and their owners. Put your dog on a leash, your cat in a stroller or your hamster in a basket and go searching for pet essentials at The Pet Safari, a one-stop shop for all pet supplies. Pick up Dental Clean Toothpaste ($18.15) or Bow Wow Spinach Sticks ($6.43) for your dog, and Eyewash ($11.70) for your cat to relieve itching caused by dried mucus. Dress your pooch in the latest Terry Duckie Bathrobe ($39.27), or buy a pair of plastic-lined Four Paws Flashy Pants ($20.35) to prevent your expensive Persian rug or antique day bed from getting soiled by your dog. If you’re in the market for a hamster ($10) or two, be sure to venture towards the back end of the store where pearl-white, yellow-pudding and sapphire-hue furballs are on display with placards stating, ‘I’m lovely, I’m cute…but don’t buy me on an impulse’. For those in search of some pedigree, stop at the Picka- Pet Tiki hut, where a Japanese chin costs $2,000 and a Yorkshire terrier costs $3,000. If your pet begins to get angsty for lack of fresh air, just step outdoors to the Secret Garden, a 3,000ft2 space with an open rooftop.
