Pulau Ubin

On reaching Ubin jetty, walk straight ahead for the National Parks information kiosk (open 8.30am-5pm daily), where you can pick up a map. To the left is the ‘town’, with a wayang (theatre) stage, a small shrine and some ramshackle houses that have been converted into bicycle rental shops, humdrum eateries and provisions shops (with stock that looks as if it hasn’t been replenished for decades). Other villagers depend on farming and fishing for a livelihood. Many used to own chickens, but poultry was banned on the island after the 2005 bird flu epidemic. The best way to explore is by bike; the island is too large, and the weather usually too hot, for walking. Bikes (available 8am-6pm) cost $3-$8 to rent; it’s wise to pick as new a model as possible. Less tiring (but less fun) is a taxi van – unmetered; negotiate the fare beforehand. There are three cycling trails (on paved and dirt roads), which lead past old fruit and rubber plantations, mangrove swamps, water-filled quarry pits and old wooden houses. Toilets and shelters are located at key points. The Chek Jawa wetlands area on Ubin’s eastern tip is worth visiting, with marine life visible at low tide. Visitor numbers are restricted to protect the fragile ecosystem, so you have to pre-book a guided tour – contact the National Parks Board for more information. If you want to stay overnight, permits are not required for camping, but note that the water from public toilets and wells is not suitable for drinking or bathing. The Marina Country Club Ubin Resort (6388 8388, www.marinacountryclub.com.sg) offers basic air-conditioned chalets.
