Sentosa, which means ‘peace and tranquility’ in Malay, is anything but. Once a fishing village, it served as a British military fortress from the 1800s to 1967 when it was known as Pulau Blakang Mati (‘Island of Death from Behind’). In 1968 it began a new lease of life as a holiday resort. Today’s Sentosa is a far cry from its 20th-century counterpart, which was burdened with lame attractions and inadequate facilities. After a $8 billion redevelopment plan rolled out in 2002, the island – covering five square kilometres (two square miles) – now has pristine man-made beaches, waterfront eating and drinking outlets, first-class resorts and a raft of attractions. Controlled and manicured it may be – this is Singapore, after all – but it’s a gamble that worked: a record 5.2 million visitors turned up in 2006.
Some think Sentosa is the bee’s knees among Singapore’s sights; others deem it a poor Disneyland wannabe. The best way to tackle the island is to embrace its tackiness along with the decent offerings. There is plenty to see so prepare to spend at least half a day here. Avoid visiting, if you can, at weekends and school and public holidays, when crowds are immense. All visitors must pay a $2 entrance fee. Free buses ply set routes between the major attractions, and trams service the beaches.
A slew of family-friendly attractions are based at the Imbiah Lookout where the cable car station is located. From here you can experience something of the island’s lush greenery on the Dragon Trail Nature Walk, which leads downhill towards two other must-visit attractions: Underwater World and Fort Siloso.
