This ten-day literary festival is the first of its kind in Singapore. A patchwork of local and international storytellers will weave tales from around the world.
• 26 Aug; 9.30am-5pm: The Storytelling Classroom: Applications Across the Curriculum
Teachers, librarians and publishers should not miss this chance to meet Sherry and Bobby Norfolk, the authors of the book sharing the same name as the seminar topic. This is storytelling at its most relevant – whether in the disciplines of maths, science, history, languages or the arts. $280.
• 26 Aug; 9.30am-5pm: Peace Talk: The Other Side of the Story
Kevin Cordi, who practises conflict resolution through non-violent means, shares stories that will be useful for social workers, teachers, guardians, parents and youth outreach counsellors. $280.
• 27 Aug; 9.30am-5pm: Imaginative Ensemble Story Teaching: Creating Thinking and Telling
Kevin Cordi conducts a second workshop, again channelling energy into broadening the imagination through narrative drama and storytelling. With 18 years’ experience as a professional story teacher, he uses innovative methods to teach kids and adults alike to recognise and understand literary content. $280.
• 28 Aug; 9.30am-12.30pm: Asian Music, Mask and Myth
Music and masks deliver the message for students and teachers alike. Forget ‘workshop’ – this is a performing arts playshop by Eth-Noh-Tec, the duo of Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang, who layer Asian mythology, folk tales and urban legends with modern sensibilities. $160.
• 28 Aug; 9.30-5pm: The Moral of the Story: Character Education through Storytelling
Emmy Award-winning Bobby Norfolk and author Sherry Norfolk use their combined experiences in television, teaching and writing to address the meaningful character insights that can be gleaned from persuasive storytelling. $280.
• 29 & 30 Aug; 3pm & 7.30pm: International Storytellers’ Showcase
An international line-up of storytellers takes the stage in this showcase. Expect folk tales from different countries, given new life by the delivery and inflections of these experienced performers (Chamber). $25; children $18.
• 2-4 Sep; 9.30am-5.30pm: Boot Camp on Digital Storytelling
Embrace new media at this workshop that combines digital storytelling with multimedia production techniques. Conducted by Denise Atchley and Leslie Rule, two of the most respected digital storytelling gurus in the US, this is an intense immersion in tomorrow’s world of images, graphics, music and sound, interweaved with age-old tales (Carnegie Lab, Toa Payoh Community Library, 6 Toa Payoh Central). $590.
• 3 Sep; 9.30am-12.30pm: The Songs, the Words, and the Story
Linda Fang, co-founder of the Washington Storyteller Theatre, keeps in touch with her Chinese folk roots as well as today’s storytelling scene. She conducts this Mandarin-speaking workshop to draw out the Chinese storyteller in you, focusing on pronunciation, music, verses and more to enable you to interpret proverb-rich tales with ease (Play Den @ The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Ln). $160.
• 3 Sep; 9.30am-5pm: How to Write and Sell a Novel
He’s risen to fame as a columnist, author and speaker – and he wants everyone to do the same. Nury Vittachi shares his secrets and trademark humour with writers looking to leave an ink blot on Asia and beyond (Play Den @ The Arts House). $300.
• 4 Sep; 9.30am-5pm: Developing Stories and Characters for Novels, Movies and Games
What does it take to create structured storylines, believable dialogue and memorable characters (you know the sort…Hannibal Lecter, Liang Po Po, Phua Chu Kang)? Nury Vittachi straddles fiction and non-fiction like the pro he is, giving you the no-nonsense guide to making it in the writing world (Play Den @ The Arts House). $300.
• 4 & 5 Sep; 3pm & 7.30pm: Asian Storytellers Concert
This event showcases Asian wisdom as told by storytellers from around the world. Illustrating universal truths with their evocative tales, these narrators will keep you riveted as they demonstrate an age-old artform (Play Den @ The Arts House). $24; children (ages 7-12) $15.
• 6 Sep; 9.30am-5pm: Permission to Play: Using Community Coaching to Work with Story Development
You’ve been waiting for this and there are only limited spaces available: the masterclass conducted by keynote speaker (and award-winning teacher, author and storyteller) Kevin Cordi. Develop your skills as he explains the dramatic and narrative elements of successful storytelling (Play Den @ The Arts House). $290.
• 8 & 9 Sep; 9.30am-6pm: Taleblazers
Best known for mind-mapping the Buzan Method, Dilip Mukerjea is noted in Singapore as a career coach and motivational speaker. This workshop is geared towards organisations and businessmen who need a shot of creativity to boost their returns on imagination, innovation and ideas (Play Den @ The Arts House). $450.
