Angel's Share

Tucked away from the crowd in a corner of Dempsey Hill (aka the pretentious-sounding ‘Tanglin Village’) is Angel’s Share – which is winemakers’ lingo for wine lost through evaporation during the ageing process. This wine bar, in a classy, somewhat rustic, location, features freestanding flaming torches, plush outdoor seating right on the grass and a DJ spinning a good mix of jazz and house tunes. Sit back, chill and pretend you’re in wine county with more than 700 labels (mainly from Australia, California, France and Italy) to choose from. A glass of moderately priced housepour sauvignon blanc goes for $13 and a bottle of Henriot champers is yours for $120. It’s a shame the cocktails appeared truly lacklustre (read: not particularly alcoholic); perhaps the bartender was trying to save the owners a few bucks, or maybe it’s just another tie-in to the bar’s responsible drinking policy and drive-home service.

Appalling Wine and Service
After reading the reviews here i went to check this place out since i'm a big wine fan myself. The whole idea of having your wine paired with your food is very trendy these past few years. To my consternation, the wooden wine chiller is a joke as every wine guy would know that wood is porous and would cause condensation within the wine chiller. And to my horror you have wine bottles being stored lying down, this obviously would affect the wine content as it age on its side as compared to having it rest tilted. I wouldn't get into the fundamental reasons why its bad as supposedly the owner is a wine connoisseur himself. After settling down, it took ages for my wine to reach the table and they serve it way too chill making me wait further as wine taste bests between 14-16 degrees celcius as oppose to 6 degrees celcius. The server had the audacity to tell me that this is how wine should be serve. Now this intrigues me further, being a wine place obviously the strictest of standards has to be met to optimise the aging of the wine, i see none of these being met. Even La Forketta, an italian restaurant across the road takes pride in storing their wine and they are well known for their pastas not wine. For consolation they serve very good calamari so the next time if you're thinking of eating calamari and would like to be seen in a wine drinking place try AngelShare. Skip the wine and try the calamari.

Horrible food and service
I went there last week with my husband, wanting to celebrate our anniversary. Even though I made a reservation a week ahead, the hostess claimed they do not have my record. Even though the restaurant was only 30% full, we had to wait for another 20 minutes for our order to be taken. At that point we decided to move to another place will give us better service.

Service Lacking
I think management should train service staff better or maybe select staff who actually enjoy being in the service line. I made a reservation for my husband's birthday and asked if they could put a candle in the dessert when it was served. Instead of saying ok, the staff said that I could get my own cake. If I had my own cake, why would I ask them to stick a candle in their dessert! So I had to explain that I did not prepare a bday cake so could they kindly put a candle in my hubby's dessert. Only then did she put me on hold to ask the chef if it was possible, as if it was such a diffficult task. Upon arriving, I was shown to a table with NO place settings. I waited 15 mins without being given a menu and had to ask for one finally. When I realised that the outdoor seating was an all smoking section, I requested to be seated inside (no, the staff did not ask me smoking or non-smoking). The staff promptly lead me to an unclean table, which another couple had just vacated. The table was full of crumbs and had butter smeared on the table cloth. Again, the lack of table setting should have told her something! When we finally got a clean table and was ready to order, I asked what the special entree of the day was. Was told it was veal and chicken. When I asked the staff how it was prepared (e.g. sauce type, fried, broiled etc), she could not answer me at all. At that point, hubby and I gave up and left for Prime Society (which has never disappointed).

Angel Share
Our Mojito's were good, but should have been muddled for longer. No lack of rum for sure. Freshly baked French bread was brought with our drinks which was a lovely touch and delicious.
