It was shuttered up, but now it’s back – and the dark and cramped abode it formerly occupied has been transformed. The new Thumper has shed its old skin for an ultra-chic look that dazzles with the abundance of glass, marble and chrome design fixtures. The club now feels more open, with a central bar that spans a third of the room’s length. The crowd looks much the same as the folks who came here in its heyday – you know, the haughty, I-know-I-am-beautiful-and-rich types. But hey, if it bothers you, focus on the cocktails: the menu boasts an astounding 99 concoctions, 27 of which are exclusive to Thumper. The rather questionable pièce de résistance, however, is the new (and intrusive, in a sense) biometrictechnology that will allow party people to access the club and get drinks simply by scanning their thumbs, which means no more waiting for hours at the bar – though a definite delay at the entrance on busy nights.
