12 Lotus
Following up his kitschy hit musical 881 about Hungry Ghost Festival’s getai concerts, local director Royston Tan’s back with 12 Lotus. The plot follows a female singer who has a seriously long run of abusive manfriends from the 1980s till the present day. Let’s hope 12 Lotus will bring Tan the same success that 881 did.

I almost cried after watching the movies. it is v touchinhg. I think most ppl dun like this movie becos they expect it to be another movie like 881 - tt is v commericalized. 12 Lotus evoked certain of my thinking abt life. I find the movie v meaning as it touches many emotional aspects of life - the life of such people who trusted too much on others. It also serves as a educational material to certain ppl. In general it is of movies with certain artisitc and cultural values.
this film was badly-scripted, terribly executed, draggy and a complete disappointment. so much for the hype from raintree, royston and the 881/12 lotus team - all cannot be trusted!
I felt the show was good, angles of shots and acting were great. The show started off really well, getting the audience to sympathise with poor Lotus in the midst of coarse hokien humour. However, i felt Royston got a little carried away with in the middle of the show and the show started to side track. After that, you couldn't tell if what was happening to lotus was supposed to be real or fake, funny or sad. And that’s what the plot and overall treatment of the movie was lost.
12 lotus is one of the best films i have ever seen, and certainly the best film ever made in singapore. the story is the story of betrayal, of a girl who is betrayed for money. a girl who is abused by her father, physically, mentally and for money. her father sells her for gambling money. this betrayal is repeated throughout her life, by the men who claims to love her. the only person who truly cares for her is a friend. astroboy puts lotus above money, he just sees a person he loves and cares for, he is lotus' kuan yin on earth. 12 lotus ought to be in international release: fantastic story, good acting, and the element of art! well done royston!
