Dine and dash

Issue 15

Starving but don’t want to miss the trailers to your movie? TOS staff takes on the challenge of finding (good) food and getting to our seats in 15 minutes or less

Lido Cineplex, Shaw House
Lido has no shortage of fast food, which makes it easy to grab quick grub before a movie. You have the choice of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s, Subway and, of course, the golden arches. But if you venture three floors below the cineplex, you’ll find a couple more hidden gems: Pepper Lunch and MOS Burger.

Pepper Lunch
Shaw House, B1, 350 Orchard Rd (6836 1123)
This is fast food served on a skillet. The idea is to mix the ingredients evenly while adding condiments while there’s still heat. I stepped in line and gave my order: ‘One Salmon Pepper Rice and a root beer please’ ($11.40 for the meal). My drink came promptly, along with my receipt. Then I settled in to wait for my hot plate of goodness. Seven minutes had passed and still no sign of my dinner. A waitress was frantically clearing the table beside me when I flagged her down and explained that my movie was about to start. Within two minutes, sizzling sounds and fragrant smells steamed my face. The meal was delicious, but 19 minutes and 35 seconds later, I was done – and screwed.

MOS Burger
Shaw House, B1, 350 Orchard Rd (6735 0507)
Ahh, MOS Burger, where old people go to work. (Seriously, half the team is made up of elderly folk.) The joint is usually packed with people, but when I rock up at 8pm, it’s pretty empty. Sweet relief. I order a Yakininu rice burger with fries and a Coke ($7.35) in a minute and a half. My food arrives within an impressive three minutes, and I wolf down my tiny burger. I eat the piping hot thickcut fries quickly. My tray is empty after 11 and a half minutes, but I still feel hungry. I run over to Pepper Lunch and eat Sabrina’s leftovers.
