Even on paper this couldn’t have seemed such a terrific idea, but Demy’s attempt to fuse Cocteau with Disney via one of fairy-tale author Charles Perrault’s less endearing conceits (a donkey that sh*ts gold) contrives to be both garish and coyly tasteful.
