World Cinema Series - Sandakan No 8 (Sandakan Hachiban Shokan: Bohkyo)
This event has finished
Presented by the National Museum Cinémathèque and Singapore Film Society, this is a monthly screening of rarely seen classics ranging from the early silent era to underground films and new wave film movements around the world. It’s sure to satisfy any film buff.
For a film that was produced and screened in the ’70s, director Kumai Kei’s tale of Saki (Takahashi/ Tanaka), a woman who used to moonlight as a karajuki-san (juvenile prostitute) in the Japanese colonies of South-East Asia can be seen as progressive. Told through flashbacks and recollections, this moving film captures the hardship faced by thousands of young Japanese girls.
Dir: Kumai Kei. 1974. Japan. 121 mins. In Japanese with English subtitles. Komaki Kurihara, Yôko Takahashi, Kinuyo Tanaka, Ken Tanaka.
