All tucked in

Here’s the deal: when you wash and reuse a cloth nappy, more water and energy is used than when you just throw out disposable diapers. However, you can minimize your ecoimpact by using cold water and hanging the nappy out to dry, rather than adding to the piles in the landfills. The ideal arrangement is to use cloth nappies at home and disposables when you’re out on the town. To help you get started, we offer our easy-to follow illustrated guide for the kite fold, one of the simplest techniques. It works like a charm.

SCHNEIDER79

1 Spread the nappy out in a diamond shape and imagine a dotted line running down the middle, from top to bottom.
2 Take the left and right corners, and fold them to meet in the middle.
3 Take the top corner and fold down like an envelope. You now have a triangle with the bottom tip facing you.
4 Take the bottom tip and fold it upwards.

TIP: If you’re folding for a boy, you can fold over twice to create more support where needed. If it’s a girl, one fold will do.
