Off the record - July

‘Everybody nose’ that N.E.R.D is working with director Hype Williams on a feature-length movie, based on its new release Seeing Sounds. Keep your eyes peeled for it in December.

On 2 August, the 2008 MTV Asia Awards is set to invade the Arena of Stars in Genting, Malaysia. Trek up to see actor/singer Jared Leto host this annual celeb-fest, or tune in to the festivities at home. Martin Scorsese has fled the scene of his latest project – a documentary on reggae icon Bob Marley – citing ‘scheduling reasons’. Jonathan Demme is slated to take over, with an expected release in February 2010.

Speaking of film, The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek has revealed plans for a Doors biopic. ‘This is the anti-Oliver Stone. This will be the true story of The Doors,’ Manzarek tells Billboard, referring to Stone’s 1991 film (The Doors). Manzarek also has a film script based on The Doors song ‘LA Woman’, exploring the use of peyote in the Native American Church – a fascinating topic well worth a trip…to the theatre, that is.

Watch out for Nas’s new, eponymous record out this month, previously titled N*gger. Though the provocative name was intended as ‘social commentary’, Nas – son of famed jazz cornetist Olu Dara – chose the selftitled route after heated debate among music critics and social activists.

Get your rock fix from…a video game? Mötley Crüe’s new single ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ actually fared better as a digital download on the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band than on iTunes. The song was downloaded more than 47,000 times via the game, and only 10,000 times on iTunes and Amazon. Most recently, Mark Mothersbaugh has announced Devo songs will be offered on Rock Band in the near-future. No word on whether we’ll be able to lay our paws on it in Singapore, though.
