Written in 1977 by German Heiner Müller, Hamletmachine is and based on Shakespeare's Hamlet but set at the end of communism in East Germany (where it was also banned). The play, first performed in Brussels in 1978, places Hamlet and Ophelia in the midst of 20th Century political, economic and social change.
