Lousy Food
The food offered at this branch of Crystal Jade Hong Kong Cafe is definitely putting a bad stain on the Crystal Jade franchise! My wife and I ordered the spring roll and fried chicken wings for starters, and we were in for a rude shock. The spring roll dish did not even remotely resemble spring roll, let alone taste like it! The "spring rolls" were pencil thin (like bread sticks) and with a little garnish, the dish seemed like Crystal Jade's pathetic attempt at fusion hor'deuve. And at S4.50, it was a definite rip off. The fried chicken wings were edible but peculiar; I tasted a hint of parsley in the batter. Parsley? Why on Earth is there European biennial herb in something so simple and local as fried chicken wings?!? I can assure you it didn't go down very well. Another pathetic attempt at fusion food, perhaps? Please be reminded that this is CRYSTAL JADE HONG KONG CAFE! And I expect cantonese style Hong Kong cafe fare, not psuedo fusion rubbish. For the main course, my wife ordered the mushroom chicken steamed rice with chinese sausage, and I ordered the salted chicken steamed rice. Traditional recipe here, no attempt at bastardization. But the standard is very poor; both the dishes were oily and tasteless, and my chicken was not even salted. Overall, the food is bad and overpriced. You can take my word for it. For the love of God (and good cantonese food), please avoid at all cost!
