Made in Singapore: [made:to:measure] by Kovit Ang
The brains Born and bred in Singapore, 33-year-old Kovit Ang spends his days between fashion styling gigs and the laborious task of designing his own [made:to:measure] label. Unlike many local fashion talents who have studied fashion design, Ang is self-taught. While producing ‘The Fringe Show’ (2003) and ‘Hemispheres’ (2004) during the respective Singapore Fashion Festivals, Ang spent time with noted designers Sunny Ang and Frederick Lee, and it was only then that he began to see his dream of creating unique wearables materialise.
The concept Taking into account that men have fewer clothing options than women, Ang made it a point to design clothes with a ton of variety. Working with menswear standards, Ang took the time to think of the various modifi cations he could create and use. Going by his latest collection, which is dominated by textured materials and loud prints, he’s clearly achieved his goal. Even the standard white shirt has not been left alone. It now comes with a twist – a double row of buttons instead of a single row.
The goods There’s nothing ordinary or run-of-the-mill about [made:to: measure]; this is tailored menswear for the flamboyant bloke or the woman who loves masculine styles. Ang offers designs with modern interpretations of three collar styles – French, wide and wing tip – coupled with his signature use of contrasting print-on-print fabrics. And as Ang prefers quality over quantity, he only makes four to six suits per season, and a dozen shirt or pant designs.
Our picks Get a piece of him while you still can. Ang has already nabbed himself a buyer from Melbourne who is snapping up his limited-edition offerings. We recommend the versatile, 100 per cent Japanese cotton white shirt, updated either with double French collar layers or French cuffs ($129-$149).
