Made in Singapore

Teddy Or Beng HuaThe goods ‘I want women to find something in my collection that speaks to them on different levels,’ says fashion designer Teddy Or Beng Hua. Inspired by his late grandmother’s wardrobe of light-coloured samfu dresses, he turned out a collection of ladies’ tops, which lacked visible armhole seams and came in a soft colour palette that exuded an air of femininity. Vibrant streaks were employed to break the monotony of space within the garment design and sheaths of denim were added for a modern, pop-culture appeal.
The brains This industrious, thirtysomething Singaporean started his fashion design career early on. By the age of 12, he was cutting his own patterns and using leftover pieces of cloth from his sister’s wardrobe to sew drawstring pants and casual homewear for himself. Inspired by everything he smells, sees, feels and tastes, Or’s designs have an element of fun and versatility. He adds a sash to some looks, uses matching accessories such as belts, shawls or ties, as well as acrylic beads for further decorative value.
His big break Or showed his spring/ summer 2008 debut collection titled ‘Street Couture’ at the Asia WOW event held in Raffles City. At one of the most anticipated satellite events of the annual Singapore Fashion Festival, Or exhibited alongside three other South- East Asian designers. Later this year, he will live in New York City for a few months, in order to gain retail exposure and develop a better understanding of the global fashion scene.
