Fitness plus watching and playing sport in Singapore
Singapore's Olympic hopefuls
There you are, stranded on a deserted island, with little more than a coconut for company. But wait! A member of Singapore’s 2008 Olympics team is there, too! Who would you choose? As you’d imagine, TOS has some suggestions:
• Li Jia Wei (table tennis):
Singapore’s favourite for a medal in Beijing is your perfect spear-fishing buddy – her rapid responses and quick wrists should guarantee you a quick meal. But will her fondness for piano playing and the lack of a ping-pong table make her any fun? The Tribal Council fears not.
• Lee Wung Yew (trap-shooting): If it’s red meat you’re after, this noted marksman would be a star with the sling-shot. But once your roast squirrel is gone, all that time spent in a trance-like state of concentration won’t make him the best campfire storyteller. Next!
• Ronald Susilo (badminton): Here’s a sport you can play on the beach. The agile Indonesian-born shuttler would leave you a better player after your island experience. But his on-court nerves might not equip him well for thunderstorms.
• Quah Ting Wen (400m medley relay): Young, fit, versatile – here’s an athlete who could get off the island, and make it to the Philippines for help. But once on land, how many 15-year olds can remember where they left their shoes, let alone their friend on the island?
• Koh Seng Leong (470-class sailing): We have a winner. Not only is Singapore’s sailing-team captain versed in ocean craft and offshore breezes, his event also demands a sailing partner, giving you a great shot of making dry land again – and cheering on Singapore at the Beijing Olympics, starting 8 August. Score!
