Games - January 2008

Brothers in Arms 3 – Hell’s Highway
This is the third installation in the Brothers in Arms series, and easily one of the most anticipated games of 2008. You play Sergeant Matt Baker, a soldier of the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden in the late stages of World War II. The game introduces many new features, like the ability to command a squad of specialised units (bazooka teams, machine-gun teams and mortar teams, as well as radio teams which can be called upon for artillery support). Like previous games, the player model uses hand signals to issue the command to his squad. In addition, you can now adopt the prone position and take cover behind objects, which is a vital part of this game’s strategy. Making the game more exciting, there is a feature called Brotherhood Moments, where the player’s character is taken over by the computer and catches one of the player’s fallen comrades. Girls, prepare to become Brothers widows – every guy is going to be staying home to play this.
Available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Price TBA.

Burnout Paradise
This high-speed racing game has been quite a while in the making but it is finally here, with improved action and experimental graphics. You drive round the city, earning through a series of challenges the right to drive the vast array of top-notch cars. For motorheads, this game has everything you could ask from a driving game. Every experience is included – screeching tyres at the traffic lights, desperate braking at the turns, crashes, breakdowns, handbrake turns in full high-definition picture with sound effects to go with it. The feeling of speeding through the city is really there, and the game feels like it’s using up every last byte of Playstation 3, something that many games promise but few deliver.
Available on Xbox and Playstation 3. Price TBA.

Rappelz
As far as Massively Multiplayer Online Role- Playing Games (MMORPGs for ‘short’) go, what you pay is what you get, and fantasybased World of Warcraft easily tops the heap. But as far (and free) as MMORPGs go, Koreanmade Rappelz is one of the best to date and is generating quite a buzz. The graphics are great and the inherent skill system is intriguing. The gameplay has been criticised for being repetitive and for the immense amount of illegal advertisements in-game, which make it hard to play. In short, it looks good but lacks substance, but then again, what do you expect? It’s free. Launched only in November 2007, the game is still riddled with tons of bugs, but is expected to get better after more versions are released over time.
