Burning Man 2008

RICK EGAN/BURNINGMAN.COMThe theme for 2008 is the ‘American Dream’, so put aside your political bias and approach this affair with an open mind. What started as a friends’ beach party during the summer solstice in the ’80s has now turned into the famed Burning Man event (25 Aug-1 Sep), known for its spontaneous and radical displays of self-expression. While its name is derived from the Saturday night ritualistic burning of large wooden figures, this year’s Burning Man effigy will stand atop an obelisk emblazoned with flags from across the world that will be illuminated at night. Burning Man spokesperson Josh Camire emphasises the individuality of the event: ‘We do not consider Burning Man a festival in the sense that other festivals are described… [It] is very different from other festivals around the world, and preparation is essential – nothing is for sale and the conditions are very harsh, so showing up unprepared can be very uncomfortable.’ Wise words to heed, particularly since the eight-day event is held on the playa (nothing to do with gangstas – it’s a dried-up lake bed) of the Black Rock Desert in the American state of Nevada. Whether you’re a first-timer or regular devotee, it’s essential to check Burning Man’s official website for survival tips as preparation involves more than simply bringing a tent and celebratory mindset in tow. For example, pooches are not allowed, and in the event of a white-out (or a large-scale dust storm), seek immediate shelter. Goggles are also recommended. Art theme camps and installations are set up as the interactive core of Burning Man, which means the only rule is that you participate.
Tickets from US$210 (S$286); call +1 415 863 5263 or go to www.burningman.com. Internet sales end 22 Aug.

RICK EGAN/BURNINGMAN.COMWhat to see: Black Rock Desert is just 150km northeast of Reno (aka ‘the Biggest Little City in the World’). Situated along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Reno saw a mini-boom during the Gold Rush and has since lived in the shadow of glitzy Las Vegas, but is slowly showing its cosmopolitan side. Take the #11 bus to Rancho San Rafael Park (just west of the University of Nevada). This is the venue for the Great Reno Balloon Race (www.renoballoon.com) in early September, and a popular spot for many mountain bicyclists who let loose on the challenging Peavine mountain trails through the park.
Where to eat & drink: Hip spot Satellite (188 California Ave, +1 775 786 3536) is a retro cocktail lounge known for its potent kamikaze shots and Wednesday groove of B-sides and hushed EPs. For the morning after, head to the Nugget Diner behind the iconic Reno Nugget Casino (233 North Virginia St, +1 775 323 0716), home to the juicy Awful Awful burger served with spicy fries.
Where to stay: If a luxe atmosphere is more up your alley, then the boutique-style Siena Hotel Spa Casino could be the one for you. From US$130 (S$177) per night. 1 South Lake St (+1 775 327 4362, www.sienareno.com). For a more homey feel just 16km away from neonlit Reno, South Reno’s Bed-Breakfast & Antiques is a great getaway. This old inn dates back to 1948 and is set amid rustic mountain ranches. From US$64 (S$87) per night. 136 Andrew Ln (+1 775 849 0772).
How to get there: Fly to Los Angeles from Singapore on Singapore Airlines (www.singaporeair.com) Then fly domestic to Reno on United Airlines (www.united.com. Alternatively, rent a car from the national agencies that serve Los Angeles International Airport – we recommend Budget car rental (www.budget.com), located on site at LAX. The eight-hour ride is a scenic route worth taking.
