The date: our daters were chauffeured in a vintage Rolls-Royce and had dinner at The Lookout at Customs House.

First impression

Yen-Lyng: 'I approached him first, when we were waiting for our car. He wasn’t as shy as I expected and he launched right into conversation, which is rare, based on the people I've met so far.'

Jeffrey: 'I was initially very nervous, but as we started chatting, it all went well. She’s very bubbly, but I prefer girls who like to play sports.'

Chemistry

Yen-Lyng: 'We talked about his love of café-hopping, our travel experiences and our past stints setting up our own businesses. I liked that he’s entrepreneurial and dares to step out of the conventional mould. We’re definitely on the same wavelength, so that’s a plus.'

Jeffrey: 'I don't think there was a romantic connection – it felt like a chat between two friends and we talked about almost everything. She’s a forthright person and very articulate. It’s refreshing to speak to a girl who can hold her own in a conversation. We agreed to disagree on a few things, like how I’d prefer to stick to my PC, when she was trying to sell me on using a Mac.'

Awkward moments

Yen-Lyng: 'None at all.'

Jeffrey: 'I’ve not been on many first dates recently, but this was one of the better ones – everything went quite smoothly.'

Afterwards

Yen-Lyng: 'When we said bye, he just cheerily said, “I’ll see you again, bye!” But isn’t that how first dates usually end here?'

Jeffrey: 'I took photos of the food, and she wanted me to send them to her – so I got her number. I messaged her to check that she got home fine, and wished her a good week ahead. I will contact her again if there's ever a chance for us to explore a new food place.'

Verdict

Yen-Lyng: ♥ 'The conversation was nice. It was intellectual and got philosophical, and I didn’t feel like I had to carry it. I’d like to see him again – it looks like there’s potential here.'

Jeffrey: ♥ 'One of the more memorable first dates that I've been on – the location, food and view were great, as was being able to talk to someone new for so long.'

The atmosphere

'It was the first time I’ve seen such an amazing 360º view, so that was a super wow factor. We could also see the light show at Marina Bay Sands, which was an extra romantic touch. The service was impeccable, too.' – Yen-Lyng

The food

'Our food came canapé style. We were worried at first that we wouldn’t be full, but we were surprisingly really stuffed after. I enjoyed the sous vide lobster medallion we had, and the caviar and foie gras on scallop.' – Jeffrey

The drinks
'They were awesome – I have a sweet tooth and the Fullerton Blend Pio Cesare Chardonnay and Nebbiolo wines from Italy matched the food well. The moscato they poured for our dessert was my favourite.' – Jeffrey
