From now to October 23, dance movement Got to Move is shaking up the city with a massive selection of island-wide workshops, performances and exhibitions. One of the highlights, though, is happening right in the heart of Singapore: GTM @ Civic District. The outdoor dance carnival (Oct 15, 4-11pm), held around the Empress Lawn and Asian Civilisations Museum Green, brings interactive ‘dance trails’, workshops, traditional art forms and more to the heart of the city.

The MP3 Experiment 2016 by The Hidden Good

Music

The MP3 Experiment 2016
Oct 15, 4.45pm

Think of this as a silent disco meets a game of Simon Says. At this interactive dance trail, participants are meant to download a track, show up at the secret location disclosed via email, hit ‘play’ simultaneously, then follow the track’s instructions as best as they can. It won’t be as simple as touching your nose, though. You’ll be asked to do anything from high-fiving the person beside you to wielding imaginary swords as you charge at one another in ‘battle’. Organised by social enterprise The Hidden Good, The MP3 Experiment 2016 aims to break down barriers between strangers as they tackle challenges – and look ridiculous – together. Register online to take part.

For more music in the Civic District, hit the dance floor at Crazy Elephant and Timbre @ The Arts House for good tunes and grub. The former’s a blues and classic rock institution, while the latter’s a more chill-out spot with live acoustic bands.

Tracing the City
Oct 15, 4.45pm

You might have strolled the streets as you museum-hopped from the Asian Civilisations Museum to the National Gallery Singapore. But how much did you take note of the spaces in between? A road barrier, the river’s edge, a skyscraper’s entrance... these overlooked elements of the metropolis are brought to life in Tracing the City, a roving dance performance choreographed by Melissa Quek. Follow the cast of 20 as they whirl around the Civic District and interact with the urban environment and audience in several immersive, site-specific performances.

For more architectural gems in the Civic District, check out CHIJMES and St Andrew’s Cathedral. The former chapel and the country’s largest cathedral, respectively, fascinate with their grand Neo-classical architecture.

Padang Tari Late-night Party

Heritage

Padang Tari
Oct 15, 4-11pm

Padang Tari (‘Field of Dance’ in Malay)is an immersive outdoor dance carnival that celebrates the diversity of traditional dance, from the exotic to the experimental, as practiced in Singapore today. Be awed by vibrant stage performances, or get your own two feet moving with workshops of varying dance styles. Noor Effendy Ibrahim, the former artistic director of The Substation, is the brains behind this festival, which hopes to revive appreciation for these heritage art forms, as well as highlight the work of Singapore artists and troupes that are redefining traditional dance for modern audiences.

Nightlife

Oct 15,
10-11pm

The Padang Tari festivities extend into the night, too, so bust your moves at the GTM late-night dance party. Besides your typical dance tunes, this party also serves up live performances that showcase traditional instruments such as the guzheng (Chinese zither)or dizi (flute) – try shuffling on the open-air ‘dancefloor’ to that. If daytime dancing is more of your thing, pick up the steps of the Got to Move Mass Dance to show some community spirit.
