    • Escape to Lyon

France is blessed with food, flair and fashion; Lyon has all three in abundance, and even the Parisians are ever so slightly jealous. The historic city’s chic boutiques are chock-full of couture, its restaurants serve up the gastronomic wonders of Burgundy and the romantically lit boulevards offer cultural treasures

      1. Couture without crowds

Lyon matches the chic shopping streets of Paris but without the crowds. The boutiques of Rue Président Edouard Herriot and the Carré d’Or area near Place Bellecour are happy hunting grounds for fashionistas. For edible treats, the morning food market on Croix-Rousse is full of local specialities.

      2. The bouchons

These traditional Lyonnais eateries are low-key but offer a true taste of Burgundy. Menus are chalked up each day and feature regional favourites such as St-Marcellin cheese, coq au vin and fish or meat dumplings called ‘quenelles’ – perfect with a fruity glass of Beaujolais.

      3. Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière

Get your bearings from this mighty church in the city centre. Come at dusk and you’ll see over 300 of the city’s buildings lit up with a rainbow of spotlights. In December the Festival of Light creates a magical atmosphere (www.lyon-france.com).

      4. The traboules

Once home to Lyon’s silk industry, Vieux Lyon is the city’s ancient heart. Its labyrinth of covered alleyways, known as traboules, protected the precious silk from the rain as it was being transported to the river barges. Great fun to explore.

      5. A night at the Opéra

Lyon’s opera and ballet is world class, and the opera house in Place de la Comédie is as spectacular as the performances. The eighteenth-century building has been transformed by a bold glass roof designed by Jean Nouvel. Forthcoming productions include Strauss’s ‘Die Fledermaus’.
