    • Escape to Salzburg

Nicknamed the ‘Rome of the Alps’, the baroque splendour of Salzburg is matched by its stunning natural setting at the foot of the Austrian mountains. Perhaps these surroundings were Mozart’s greatest inspiration

      1 Mozart’s birthplace

      Mozarteum - the Large Hall.jpg

Salzburg is celebrated for the spectacular baroque architecture and tightly packed streets and courtyards of its Old Town. In 1756 Mozart, the city’s most famous son, was born in the family home on Getreidegasse. It’s now a museum.

      2 The cathedral

It was said that the seventeenth-century archbishops of Salzburg preached in stone; perhaps their finest sermon is the city’s cathedral. Its bright green domes rise above the rooftops of the Old Town and its beautiful interior still rings with the music Mozart composed for it.

      3 Hohensalzburg fortress

Salzburg’s principal landmark looms over the city and its walls have remained unconquered for almost 1,000 years. There’s a spectacular view from the fortress, but if you can’t face the 30-minute walk to the summit there’s a train that departs from Kapitelplatz.

      4 Schloss Mirabell

Beyond the Old Town are a number of sumptuous palaces built by Salzburg’s archbishops. The seventeenth-century Palace of Mirabell has glorious grounds and if you visit the wonderful summer residence of Hellbrunn Palace, watch out for
      the trick fountains.

      5 The Sound of Music

Some locals are a bit embarrassed about their city’s connection with ‘The Sound of Music’. Regardless, there’s a fun tour that takes in the filming locations while everyone sings along to ‘Do-Re-Mi’ (www.panoramatours.com). You can ‘climb every mountain’ if you want to, but the Untersberg cable car is easier – it’s a short car or bus journey from the city.
