The 21 top things to do in Geneva
  • Things to do

Get under Geneva’s skin and you’ll discover a huge array of great things to do, from the international to the local. It’s a bustling city filled with businesspeople and young professionals, and those who dig deep will find its alternative side – live music in offbeat clubs like L’Usine, the vintage shops and flea market of Plainpalais, the city’s burgeoning cocktail scene and the artisan workshops of Carouge. And, despite the tourists, Geneva’s famous attractions are famous because they’re thoroughly important – where else could you tour a world-leading particle physics lab and the room where UN bods make world-changing decisions? 21 amazing things to do in Zurich
  • Things to do

Set alongside a shimmering lake and framed by alpine mountains, Zurich seamlessly blends the indoor and outdoor. Take a stroll around the Old Town, check hip attractions like the Viadukt and then take a dip in a ‘badi’ – open-air swimming pools beloved by locals. For the best views, hop on a train and head towards a nearby mountain, or for high life of a different kind, eyeball Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most expensive shopping streets. Zurich also loves to party, with an exciting network of bars and clubs open into the small hours and beyond. RECOMMENDED: Find out about Zurich’s best restaurants. Zurich’s best restaurants
  • Restaurants

When it comes to selecting a restaurant, Zurich has seen some healthy transformation these last few years. There's a multitude of excellent places, both old and new that are currently defining the cities culinary scene. Waves are being made at the more flash end of the scale with the likes of glitzy Razzia leading the pack but these have focused on a cutting edge interior design style rather than introducing daring new cuisine types. There are rare exceptions with the likes of the ambitious Maison Manesse team who combine trendy surroundings and a bold attitude to their menu. Dining out in style in Zurich though comes at a hefty price and there is still a gap in the market for eating experiences that combine stylish surroundings and value for money, especially for those with children. If finance is not an issue, then whether it's cooking of the Michelin star variety or a Schnitzel the size of an entire plate, the city is dishing it out with the best of them.

Mist was still obscuring the pre-Alps on the crisp autumn morning that I boarded the sauna boat on Lake Zurich in Switzerland. Fluttering sails of small vessels beckoned me into the serene, blue-gray water as I grabbed the wheel, pushed the engine lever forward and slowly joined them.  The other boaters were out for a Sunday morning sail. But in a few moments, I'd be jumping into the chilly lake. The Sauna Boat (or Saunaboot), run by Bootsvermietung Enge, allows anyone, regardless of nautical knowledge, to drive around the lake's 34 square miles on their own and choose an out-of-the-way spot to use as their own cold-plunge locale after spending some time in a private dry sauna aboard the boat.  Photograph by Shaye Weaver for Time Out When my crew of two and I stopped the boat parallel to one of the banks, I headed to the back to pour some fresh lake water on the wood-burning stove and soak in the heat. Just eight minutes in, I decided it was enough and made my way to the little ladder at the front of the boat. From the bow of the boat, I could see several feet down into the lake's clear water, kelp dancing just beneath the surface. It was time to plunge.  I never thought I'd dip even a toe in a city's lake water, but here I was, about to immerse myself (head to my toes) in Lake Zurich. I'd only been in the city for a day and I was about to put my full trust in the locals' claim that the water is clean. With a quick push away from the ladder, I was in the lake. The cool wate

Geneva's best restaurants
  • Restaurants

Eating out in Geneva restaurants is part of the fabric of the city and for local office workers and businesspeople a long lunch in a local restaurant is an essential part of their working day, forging fruitful partnerships over a filet de perch and a glass of local chasselas. Given the amount of money swirling around the shores of Lake Geneva, this isn’t a city with a dearth of high-end restaurants, and at the five-star hotels, such as the Four Seasons restaurant Izumi, you’ll find haute-cuisine of all flavours. Those with less fulsome budgets are better catered for in the Old Town where modern Swiss and European food is easy to come by and usually good quality. Likewise in Carouge, Geneva’s pretty Italianate suburb which is packed with classy restaurants like Café des Négociants and bars and sees fewer tourists than the Old Town. While little in Geneva is cheap, the city’s recent predilection for food trucks and burger joints means there are more budget options than ever.

The 100 best sex scenes of all time

Sex. Watching it can sometimes come close to having it – and once in a while, it’s superior. Putting on our serious hats for a second, sex is also a bedrock of cinema – the undercurrent of all romantic movies. By charting the history of onscreen eroticism, one can trace a culture’s hang-ups, along with the worldwide audience’s evolving appetites. On the occasion of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, we researched the 100 most groundbreaking sex scenes of all time (not unpleasurable work). In the process, we discovered seismic moments in Hollywood’s riskiness, as well as a global bounty of uninhibited exuberance from Japan, England and – of course – France. The 10 best bars in Zurich
  • Bars and pubs

Bars in Zurich have seen some dramatic changes in recent years, particularly over in Zurich West. Once dominated by a classic bar and traditional pub scene, a flurry of openings has underlined Zurich's status as Switzerland’s most international city, at least when it comes to drinking. George and Razzia in stylish Seefeld could appeal to the high life denizens of London’s Mayfair area while the New York townhouse vibe of Hotel Rivington & Sons captures many thirty-something bar hoppers' aspirations for a perfect pre-party venue. The vibrancy of the bar scene has been fuelled by the local thirst for the after work “apero” - an aperitif around 5pm – which is now almost a daily obligation, especially among the banking set. It’s all part of Zurich’s love of la dolce vita, so join in and order a Hugo, Aperol Spritz or Lillet Vive to get your Zurich bar crawl under way.

When it takes a boat, a train and a steady hike to get an incredible view, you need to make sure the trip is worthwhile. And sometimes, the trip is better than what you came to see. At least, that is what I learned when I climbed Mt. Rigi, the "Queen of the Mountains" in Switzerland. Located in Central Switzerland's Alps surrounded by the Lakes Lucerne, Zug and Lauerz, Mt. Rigi's summit, Rigi Kulm, is 5,899 feet (or 1,798 meters) above sea level. It's known for incredible 360-degree views of the Alps, 13 lakes in the lowlands, Germany and France as well as the cities of Lucerne and Zug. The journey there from the city of Lucerne is just as visually stunning. Using the Swiss Travel Pass last fall, I boarded a steamboat at Lucerne's Bahnhofquai headed for the beautiful lakeside town of Vitznau still in the canton of Lucerne. As we dined, the boat slid through Lake Lucerne past its epic landscape with mountain peaks and villages rising up on either side of us. Throughout the nearly one-hour trek, the views left me speechless. Photograph provided by Switzerland Tourism   Photograph provided by Switzerland Tourism   Photograph by Shaye Weaver for Time Out Once there, I transferred to the Cogwheel Railway—Europe's first mountain railway—(for free with the Swiss Travel Pass) for a long, steep trek up the side of Mt. Rigi through small villages and pastures. The sound of the clattering train was broken up only by a chorus of mooing cows as we climbed to the top. The higher we w
