One of several hotels in town that claim Ernest Hemingway as their most distinguished guest (he used to write for the Toronto Star newspaper), this Victorian, red-brick hotel provides travellers with a characterful (and reasonably priced) alternative to the downtown high-rises. Originally built as a private home in 1880, this historic building now comprises 82 rooms (ranging from basic and small to suites with fireplaces or jacuzzis). It's close to Toronto's gay village, and also handy for the subway. Steer clear of the 'home office' rooms located in the basement: they are dark and gloomy.
