The first concert at this historic auditorium took place in 1894 and featured Handel's Messiah, performed by a 500-member choir and 70-piece orchestra. Today the 2,765-seat hall is still one of the most rewarding places in the city to hear classical music. Sight lines vary, and the upper seats are hard and cramped, but the acoustics and intimacy compensate. Before Roy Thomson Hall was opened, this was home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Classical concerts are not as common now at Massey Hall, but you can still see great folk, blues, country and jazz. There is no better place to catch such acts as Wynton Marsalis, Alison Krauss and BB King.
