One of Nigeria's most outstanding natural features is Zuma Rock, a free-standing chunk 300 metres high considered the country's geographic centre. With sheer cliffs on all sides, it is situated 55km north-west of the capital near the town of Suleja. South of Abuja, 120km away, is the little settlement of Lokoja, at the confluence of Nigeria's two great rivers, the Niger and the Benue. Here the British established a trading post, then a regional government. Lokoja also contains Nigeria's largest European cemetery, with tombstones dating back to 1867. The Confluence Beach Hotel offers the best view of the surroundings.
