Restaurants & bars

Abuja's dining scene is somewhat staid, many restaurants appealing to diplomats and international businessmen, but you can also find plenty of downmarket lunchtime options for local workers.

For African cuisine, Jevinik (494 Bangui Road, off Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II, 0805 124 7743 mobile) specialises in Igbo dishes from the east, while the local branch of Shagalinku (Plot 621 Area II, off Central Business District, Garki, 09 314 8288) offers purely northern Nigerian fare - expect plenty of miyan taushe, vegetable and pumpkin soup.

Top-of-the-range tandoori can be enjoyed at Wakkis (Plot 171, Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, 09 413 4552), where major international politicians have tucked into masala fish tikka and delicious dhal dishes. For snacks and light bites, seafood rice and various other mains, the Cherry Plus Bakery (Ground floor, Dunes Center, 44 Augiyi Ironsi Way, Maitama, 09 413 7256) is popular, as is the British Council Rooftop Café (Plot 3645, IBB Way, Maitama, 09 413 7870), whose view of Aso Rock is the main attraction.
