There are plenty of festivals and events in Alghero, from traditional celebrations of saints such as San Francesco (4 Oct) and patron saint San Michele (28-30 Sept) to the Sea Urchin Fair (end of Jan/beginning of Feb) and Alghero Summer Music (classical music concerts; Aug). Easter week is taken very seriously, with torchlit processions and other solemn religious rituals, and so is July’s honouring of the Virgin of Valverde (1-10 July). To hammer home the welcome extended by the town to visitors, there’s even a fair with the sole purpose of honouring its tourists with music, dance and food (Tourists’ Fair, 3 Aug).
