Alicante’s finest is the five-star Hotel Hospes Amérigo (C/Rafael Altamira 7, 965 146 570, www.hospes.es, €130-€160); on the site of an old Dominican convent, it is an oasis of calm. Around the corner, the marble-trimmed four-star Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza (Plaza del Ayuntamiento 6, 965 210 188, www.hotelmediterraneaplaza.com, €85-€120) has a rooftop gym and terrace. For sea views and a spa, try the enormous Hotel Spa Porta Maris (Plaza Puerta del Mar 3, 965 147 021, www.hotelspaportamaris.com, €98-€106).

Alicante’s best mid-range hotel is the fabulous, colourful Hostal Les Monges Palace (C/San Agustín 4, 965 215 046, www.lesmonges.net, €39-€44), where each room has its own theme. At the central NH Cristal (C/Tomás López Torregrosa 11, 965 143 659, €50-€96), corporate decor is offset by excellent value, while Pensión La Catedral (C/Labradores 5, 965 213 648, €15-€30) is more basic.
