Ancient ruins figure large in the Athenian year. There’s the Athens Festival at the outdoor Herod Atticus and Lycabettus theatres (www.hellenicfestival.gr, May-Oct), a chance to experience the Acropolis by moonlight (Full Moon Open Day, Aug) and, of course, the Athens Marathon along the route run by Phidippides (5 Nov, www.athensmarathon.com).
