Shopping

Upmarket shops include Natacha (3 avenue Edouard VII, 05 59 22 43 42) and Hermès (19 avenue Edouard VII, 05 59 24 00 64). You’ll find department store Galeries Lafayette on place Clemenceau and countless outlets for urban and surf garb (for surfing equipment and lessons, try the Quiksilver store on the seafront). Also watch out for the new fashion line, called 64, initiated by young Basques to promote their region. Good local buys include table linen, espadrilles and chocolate – for the latter, try Henriet (place Clemenceau, 05 59 24 24 15). The covered market, Les Halles (open mornings daily), sells superb Basque ham and chorizo.
