Belgium is small, its trains are cheap, and other destinations are nicely within reach. The cities of Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent are all within an hour’s train ride. Or do as the Belgians do and spend a day at the coast. There are numerous small resorts as well as regal Ostend. The Kusttram (coastal tram) makes a wonderful day trip on a summer’s day; it runs from De Panne to Knokke (070 220 200, one-day pass €5, www.dekusttram.be).
