The insider's guide to New York
Real New Yorkers reveal the coolest shops, bars, hotels and restaurants.
An insider's guide to NYC Art
Article continues
It’s ten years since New York’s commercial galleries began migrating
from Soho to the West Side, transforming old garages into
hyper-elegant, minimalist spaces; Larry Gagosian’s Gallery on West 24th
Street is the largest and most flamboyant of this Chelsea set. Now,
though, six young dealers are opening up shop in a series of former
loading bays on West 27th Street in a bid to counter the in-your-face
commercialism of their smart neighbours.
Meanwhile, in the museums, look out for the Guggenheim’s retrospective
of David Smith, the sculptor who inspired Anthony Caro to switch to
steel until May 14 (www.Guggenheim.org). Robert Rauschenberg’s
combines, including the famous paint-splattered bed, are at the
Metropolitan Museum until April 2 (www. Metmuseum.org). Andrea Zittel,
whose womb-like capsules have to be personalised by their owners, is
showing at the New Museum until May 27 (www.newmuseum.org). John
Szarkowski is famous for building the Museum of Modern Art’s superb
photography collection during his time as curator, but this
retrospective, starting in 1943, reveals him to be a fine photographer
himself until May 15 (www.MoMa.org). If you missed the London show of
Edvard Munch’s self-portraits, a Munch retrospective opens at MoMa on
February 19 (until May 8). William Wegman’s photographs and videos star
his two dogs, Man and Fay Ray. Ace performers, they enabled him to
produce wonderfully witty and intelligent work. His retrospective is at
the Brooklyn Museum from March 10-May 26 (www.brooklynmuseum.org).
If the dates of your visit are flexible, it would be worth planning
your trip around this season’s biggie – an overview of Dada – running
at MoMa from June 18 -September 11.
