Regular trains run to nearby Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, and home to the weird and wonderful Teatre-Museu Dalí (Plaça Gala-Salvador Dalí 5, 972 677 500, www.salvador-dali.org, closed Mon), designed by the artist himself. His tomb is in the building.

For skiing, La Molina (972 892 031, www.lamolina.com) is two hours by bus from Girona, in the eastern Pyrenees. It is reasonably priced, and has slopes for all levels.
