Nightlife centres on Avenyn, in particular the stylish Lounges (Kungsportsavenyn 5, 711 1541, www.lounges.se) and the five-floored bar, barbecue restaurant and club Nivå (Kungsportsavenyn 9, 701 8090, www.restaurangniva.com). Elegant Valand (Vasagatan 41, 183093, www.valand.nu) has been at the centre of local nightlife since 1886 and has a restaurant, nightclub and mini casino.

The Dubliner (Östra Hamngatan 50B, 139020, www.dubliner.se), across the moat, regularly features live music. You can catch also bands at Sticky Fingers (Kaserntorget 7, 701 0717, www.stickyfingers.nu) or in the legendary jazz club Nefertiti, simply referred to by locals as ‘Neff’ (Hvitfeldtsplatsen 6, 711 1533, www.nefertiti.se). Gothenburg’s largest dancefloor is at Trädgårn (Nya Allén, 102080, www.tradgarn.se), while trend-conscious cocktail sippers can be found at bar, restaurant and club Vasastan (Viktoriagatan 2, 130302, www.vasastan.org).
