The best of Austrian and Italian cuisine has found its way into the cooking of this neighbouring country, and the food resulting from that fusion is reason enough to visit. To sample affordable, hearty home cooking, we recommend Priskofu (Recna ulica 8, 426 4508); the peppered steak and tasty stews are so beloved here that menus aren’t deemed necessary. Candlelit, bottle-lined Movia Vinoteka (Mestni trg 2, 425 5448) is an excellent spot to taste the surprisingly delicious home-grown wines. The three-floored gostilna (local inn) Sokol (Ciril-Metodov 18, 439 6855) has a Disney-does-Slovenia feel but, despite appearances, the food is authentic, the portions are huge and good value. To enjoy traditional dishes cooked with a sophisticated, contemporary spin, Spajza (Gornji trg 28, 425 3094) and Pri Vitezu (Breg 18-20, 426 6058) can’t be bettered. To clink cocktails with local trendies, head to the city’s best-known riverside rendezvous, Café Macek (Krojaska ulica 5, 425 3791).
