To be right in the heart of the action, stay at the lovely boutique Hotel Larios (C/Marqués de Larios 2, 952 222 200, www.hotel-larios.com, €109-€180), at one corner of the Plaza de la Constitución. The Larios’s L2 bistro restaurant is superb. The nearby AC Málaga Palacio (C/Cortina del Muelle 1, 952 220 698, www.ac-hotels.com, €128-€145) is another high-end hotel, well kept and plush. Also consider the splendid hilltop Parador del Gibralfaro (C/Camino de Gibralfaro, 952 221 902, www.paradores.es, €140-€160), which boasts a rooftop swimming pool and tremendous views.

Cheaper options are plentiful and include the very central Hostal Larios (C/Marqués de Larios 9, 952 225 490, €50) and Hostal Juanita (C/Alarcón Luján 8, 952 213 586, €36-€55). If proximity to a beach is a priority, you could try the charming Hotel Cohiba, on the seafront in Pedregalejo (Paseo Marítimo el Pedregal 64, 952 206 900, www.cohibahotel.com, €106-€113).
