Restaurants & bars

Most restaurants are teetotal and many bars serving alcohol are attached to hotels, as are some of the finest restaurants - the Taj Mahal, Oberoi Towers and JW Marriott (see Hotels) each have several excellent restaurants. Outside the hotels, one of the consistently best restaurants in town is Indigo (4, Mandalik Road, Colaba, +912222856316), with fine world cuisine, elegantly sparse decor and an outdoor terrace. For excellent mid-priced seafood try Mahesh Lunch Home (8-D, Cawasji Patel Street, Fort, +912222870938), which specialises in luscious Mangalorean dishes. For cheap and cheerful Western food, Leopold's Café and Bar (Colaba Causeway, +912222020131, +912222873362) is a traveller's favourite - light, bright and airy with cold beer and egg and chips. Don Giovani (Juhu Tara Road, +912226153125) serves standout Italian food and Olive (Khar, +9126058228) cooks up some mean Mediterranean cuisine.

One of the most entertaining ways to eat is from the bubbling cauldrons and open-air snack stalls down along the seafront.
