Restaurants & bars

For a welcome change from touristy beerhalls, central Andechser am Dom (Weinstrasse 7A, 298481) offers the usual regional dishes along with the house speciality champagne-Weisswurst. There’s a leafy terrace in summer. Many think Peter Schmuck’s Lenbach (Ottostrasse 6, 549 1300, closed Sun) is the best of the new cosmopolitan eateries, along with the sleek, creative Seven Fish (Gärtnerplatz 6, 2300 0219), in the heart of the gay quarter.

The most renowned restaurant in town is Tantris (Johann-Fichte-Strasse 7, 361 9590, closed Mon & Sun), with two Michelin stars. If you just want a Wurst and a beer with no fuss, head for Viktualenmarkt in the city centre, with its handful of beer terraces.
