Just north of the city, Limuru marks the start of the Highlands, a pretty area of tea and coffee plantations, with pleasant walks and dramatic views of the Rift Valley wall. Beyond Limuru, the road plunges down into the Rift Valley, passing Mount Longonot, Lake Naivasha and the Hell’s Gate National Park. Further on Lake Nakuru, with its superb flocks of flamingos and excellent small game reserve, are also within easy daytrip distance of the city. Olorgasailie, 72km south of the city, is an important prehistoric archaeological site with an excellent small site museum.
