Oporto is the gateway to the north, with its lovely beaches and pretty towns, including the cradle of the nation, Guimarães. Another option is a rail or boat trip up the Douro valley – another UNESCO World Heritage Site – whose terraced slopes have been cultivated by winemakers for centuries.
