Osijek has plenty of decent Slavonian eateries where you can sample local culinary highlights such as fish stew (fis paprikas) and venison stew (cobanac). One such is Alas (Reisnerova 12A, 031 202 311), the local word for fisherman, whose speciality is perkelt od soma, a hearty fish stew with huge pieces of catfish in a spicy paprika sauce. Laguna Croatica (Dubrovacka 13, 031 369 203) is a traditional Croatian restaurant decked out in wood and stone, and with a focus on Dalmatian and fresh-water fish dishes. The Slavonska kuca (Kamila Firinger 26, 031 208 277) is a good starting place to savour the many regional specialities in a self-consciously Slavonian atmosphere. The city's café culture is centred on the riverside promenade, and on a Saturday morning the terrace of the revitalised Hotel Osijek is a favourite place to be stylish. The main square of the Tvrdja has one of the greatest concentrations of bars, with other favoured haunts located around the university.
The Old Bridge Pub (Franje Kuhaza 13, 031 211 611) is busy if mainstream while S.Co.Bar (Suncana 8, no phone) was an alternative hangout now under new arty ownership.
