There are 40 islands in the Oslofjord, which links Oslo with the open sea. Hovedøya, the ‘pearl of the Oslofjord’, has the ruins of a medieval Cistercian monastery. Take a ferry from Vippetangen. Forested Nordmarka offers excellent walking paths and ski trails. The region of Vestfold (www.visitvestfold.com) stretches along the west coast of Oslofjord and is noted for its natural beauty and the Viking heritage around Tonsberg.
