Old Royal Palace

Part of the ticketed castle tour, the palace offers three areas of royal chambers above ground level, all with badly photocopied engravings for displays, most with more Russian text than English, and, in the cellar, an exquisite, gorgeously presented new permanent exhibition on palace life. The new displays are housed in the 12th-century Romanesque remains of Prince Sobêslav’s residence. A worthwhile highlight at ground level is the Vladislav Hall, designed by Benedict Ried at the turn of the 16th century, where Václav Havel was sworn in in 1990. Its exquisitely vaulted ceiling represents the last flowering of Gothic in Bohemia
