Petřín hill
Rising up in the west of Malá Strana is Petřín hill, the highest, greenest and most peaceful of Prague’s seven hills. The area is the largest expanse of greenery in central Prague – a favourite spot for tobogganing children in winter and canoodling couples in summertime. Petřín comes from the latin word for rock, a reference to the hill’s past role as the source for much
of the city’s Gothic and Romanesque building material. The southern edge of the hill is traversed by the so-called Hunger Wall (Hladová zeœ), an eight-metre-high (23-foot) stone fortification that was commissioned by Charles IV in 1362 in order to provide some work for the poor of the city.
