With 21 altars, some fine frescoes and a desiccated human forearm hanging next to the door, St James’s stands out. The latter item belonged to a 15th- century jewel thief who tried to steal gems from the statue of the Virgin. The Madonna grabbed him and the limb had to be cut off.
