Restaurants & bars

As the main town in Istria, Pula cannot fail to have decent restaurants. Three would make the nationwide top ten of most local gourmet critics: the Valsabbion (Pjescana uvala IX/26, 052 218 033, www.valsabbion.net); the Milan (Stoja 4, 052 300 200, www.milan1967.hr) and the Vela Nera (Pjescana uvala, 052 219 209, www.velanera.hr). All three are out of town, in Verudela and Stoja. In town, the Kantina (Flanaticka 16, 052 214 054) and Scaletta (Flavijevska 26, 052 541 599). are recommended. The Forum and side streets are lined with terrace venues, but none are particularly notable.

Pula has decent little bars but few in prominent locations. Local law forbids a city-centre bar opening after midnight, particularly enforced for open-air venues. Towards Verudela, where Buducinova and Tomasinijeva meet, is a hub of spacious terrace venues. The best are Podroom (Buducinova 16) and Cabahia (Sirolina 4).
